What is this!? Oh really! You’re not kidding, you do all this yourself? What did you say? You only work at night. What? You put the juice together with the peal in an urn in the ground for nine months, I see!

This is the way people ask me questions ever since I came in contact with wines that are referred to as ”natural wines”. But it doesn’t stop at that. The people that work with these type of wines are fantastic and have such incredible personalities. You gather around some wine and slurp, taste, laugh and socialize. There’s great food, great music and in this instant you are happy that you are part of something that feels right for both the soul and the environment. When you open up a new bottle of wine it feel like playing the latest vinyl from Nick Cave or an equivalent, in anticipation of Tom Waits’ European tour. It’s still only music but it’s music that goes straight into your heart and you just know that there’s real love behind it.

We were a bunch of food and drink enthusiasts who went to Copenhagen to visit ”Frivin”, a showcase event for those who want to laugh, spit, eat and later on share each others bottles and dance together. Most of all, it was a celebration of the 60 winemakers who create wines with the force of nature.

Everything started in 2005 when Rosforth and Pétillant (two pioneering importers of nature wines in Copenhagen) invited people for a wine tasting. It started off by feeling somehow too shallow, just another tasting. Something has to be done, a change of scene. Later in the evening a group of people together with some winemakers decided to taste some more wines and there was Balkan music and food. A great success!

It was all repeated in 2008, and in 2010 the event was baptized ”Frivin” – Free Wine. Now the tasting that is not just a tasting has grown from a few winemakers to 60 eccentric winemakers in 2012, 2014 and 2016. With 800 visitors who enjoy this gathering, the socializing, the tasting, the slurping and the laughing, history is made, and the experience is fabulous.

We are already longing for 2018, join us then!
